The Haliwa-Saponi people come from 3 major groups: Tutelo-Saponi, Nansemond, and Tuscarora. Being Tuscarora, the creation story states that North America was danced into existence on the back of the Great Snapping Turtle. This piece reflects the relationship we have with Turtle Island as Ękwehęwę: and our responsibilities to continue to steward all that rests on the turtle’s back.
