Designed by Evynn and Perlean Richardson
The packhouse has always been seen as an iconic symbol or resistance for the Haliwa-Saponi people. In the 50's when our people began to jump from place to place to meet in secrecy throughout Hollister, the packhouse, owned by BB and Virginia Richardson, became a place to build community and reclaim sovereignty in our own right. The symbols on the bottom border of the building represent the men who would hide throughout the woods in the surrounding area with shotguns to protect attendees. The tobacco plants between each man show not only what we held sacred, but what hung over our ancestors' heads as they met. Finally, the top is lined with lightning motifs to represent our Grandfather Thunderers, who continue to protect us just like they did our ancestors during those times.
